What we do

Forgan Arts Centre is a home for artistic production, experimentation, and learning in North East Fife.

Originally established by members of the local community in 1974, for five decades we have been delivering creative learning in art and craft. In 2022, we moved premises to The Leng Home estate. Since then, we have presented a new programme of socially engaged projects, artist commissions, residencies, community activities and events with an expanding network of artists and partners, alongside our art and craft classes.

We are specialists in ceramics, glass, painting, and textiles, as well as the foundational practice of observational drawing. Our new context means we are custodians of almost three acres of land and gardens. Drawing on the deep connections we have with our local community and our commitment to protecting the natural environment, we are cultivating a site that has people and the planet at its heart.

The Leng Home Estate

We purchased The Leng Home estate via Community Asset Transfer thanks to the enthusiastic support of local people. The estate is the historic home of the Leng family, progressive philanthropists, and advocates of accessible educational reform through art and creativity. We are regenerating the estate and developing our programme in relation to this context. The Leng Family’s mantra was ‘to learn by doing’ and we proudly continue this tradition.

Our vision is to sustain a uniquely open, welcoming space, to serve the needs of the community through creative practice, and directly enhance arts culture in all its forms.

Our mission is to draw people together, to provide arts-based learning and opportunities from early to advanced stages of practice.  Through our empowering and transformative ambition, we will create a grassroots artistic ecology, which is a safe place to take risks, challenge assumptions, and meet other people with a shared interest in the arts. Core to this are our facilities and expertise, that offer classes, professional facilities, and studio based learning, alongside residencies and events programme.

The Leng Home estate is Forgan Arts Centre’s home. The site comprises three buildings, the main centre, The Gardener’s Cottage and the Kiln House, all set within three acres of land. The main building is home to multipurpose classrooms and nine artist studios which are suitable for individual artists or collectives across disciplines. Our extensive grounds include mature woodland, curated gardens, purposeful wilderness, allotments, and shared community growing space. The Gardener’s Cottage is undergoing renovation and will be used for artist residencies and respite breaks.
