Saturday 14 March, 9am-12noon at Wormit Bay, FREE
Calling curious minds and adventurous spirits…
Join us for a Saturday morning adventure where children will explore ideas, imagination, and the outdoors – on land and on the water.
This special workshop brings together:
- Outdoor water exploration with Outdoor Explore
- Creative filmmaking as part of an ongoing artist residency at Forgan Arts
- Imaginative conversation led by philosopher Dr Grace Lockrobin
During the morning children will:
- Take part in a playful philosophy session asking big questions about nature, imagination and themes relating to rivers.
- Head out onto the water in kayaks, coracles and canoes (with experienced outdoor leaders).
- Help create images for a film project about the River Tay.
- Have hot chocolate and marshmallows around a small campfire on the beach to finish the workshop
No previous kayaking or philosophy experience is needed. We will take everything at a manageable pace to keep it fun for all abilities.
Parents/carers are welcome to leave their children for the duration of the workshop, or stay nearby if they prefer. There are lovely walks along the cliff path to Balmerino, cafes in the nearby village, or you can stay close to the beach and watch the activities unfolding, the choice is yours.
Who is it for?
Children aged 7–11 who:
- Love being outdoors
- Enjoy asking questions
- Like making things
- Are curious about the world
Part of a Film Project
The workshop forms part of an ongoing artist residency at Forgan Arts Centre, led by award-winning artist filmmakers Caitlin and Anj Webb-Ellis. Children will have the opportunity to contribute creatively to the project by helping to generate images and ideas which will be woven into a final installation to be shown at Forgan Arts later in March. Full consent information will be provided for filming, and everyone will be welcome to attend the final screening where there will be food and a musical performance.
Water Safety
All water activities are suitable for complete beginners and will be led by qualified instructors from Outdoor Explore, with over 17 years of experience taking adults and children onto the water. All safety equipment, wind and waterproof jackets and buoyancy aids will be provided, and activities will be age-appropriate.
What is Philosophy for Children?
Philosophy for Children encourages young people to playfully explore ideas together, building confidence in their thoughts, and learning how to think deeply and kindly with others. There are no right answers, just great questions. Dr Grace Lockrobin is a philosopher and educator based in Sheffield who has worked with children and young people for over 25 years.
What to bring
- Children will not be going into the water, so will not need wetsuits. All activities will be geared towards ensuring they stay safe and dry.
- Children should wear shoes they don’t mind getting damp and warm comfortable sports clothes with a warm coat. In case they get splashed please pack a spare change of clothes.
- We will provide warm blankets and snacks (there will be a chance to share dietary requirements when you sign up), and children should bring their own water bottle.
