About the class

In these classes, your tutor will cover all methods of making, from hand building techniques such as coiling, pinching and slab building, to throwing and altering work on the wheel. You will also learn about the different glazing methods and techniques you can use to finish your creations. The tutor, Heather, will guide you to make the style of pottery that you are inspired by, and encourages experimentation to achieve this. Our classes are educational as well as social and open to beginners and experienced potters.

What we provide

Tools, glaze and firing costs are included in the course costs but clay is purchased through the centre via card payments based on use (approx. £5 per ¼ bag). There will be some reclaimed clay to use for no cost, just ask your tutor about this material.

About the pottery

We cover a range of hand-building, wheel throwing, and glazing techniques and work is fired regularly at the Centre. We have six pottery wheels of varying sizes, including one for people with low-mobility that does not require the use of a foot peddle. The wheels are in our bright ‘pottery kitchen’ where you will also find a glazing station. There is a drying room, kiln house with multiple kilns, and a pottery studio where you can sit or stand to work.

Attending pottery classes opens the door further workshops where you can expand your skills and further your practice. Some workshops are only available to current or returning students or experienced ceramicists. This includes raku workshops, studio-days, and some ceramic techniques.

About the tutor

Your tutor for this class is ceramicist and master craftsperson Heather Gilbert. Heather studied Fine Art before pursuing her practice in ceramics, working to set up Collective studios for artists, exhibiting her work widely, and teaching. Enthusiastic about alternative glazing and firing methods, Heather leads raku workshops and is always open to helping you experiment and innovate with new ways of working.
