About the Workshop
During this class your tutor Kevin will introduce participants to the basics of working with porcelain and paper clay. This class is suitable for beginners and intermediate students who wish to further their skills and practice.
During the class you will have the option to make a vessel or jewellery which will use the unique qualities of porcelain, such as it’s translucence when fired, and the flexibility of paper clay. You will learn to prepare the clay before designing and making your pieces. All work will be fired here at the centre.
An overview of class activities:
- Introduction to the materials of porcelain and paper clay.
- Demonstrations in making paper clay casting slip
- Making porcelain paper clay casting slip and clay
- Pouring porcelain paper clay casting slip on plaster batts to make thin sheets
- Demonstrations of slip casting
- Demonstrations of colouring porcelain and paper clay
- Hand building using porcelain paper clay cast sheets
- Hand building using porcelain and porcelain paper clay
What to bring
Materials are provided and available to purchase at the centre. You may with to bring a sketch book and pencil to make notes and to draw your design ideas. Please bring a packed lunch. Tea and coffee is available at the Centre.
About your Tutor
This workshop is led by artist and ceramicist Kevin Andrew Morris. Initially undertaking Three Dimensional Design at Grays School of Art, Kevin went on to graduate in Ceramic Design from The Glasgow School of Art before furthering his education with post graduate courses at Robert Gordon’s University.
In addition to teaching at Forgan Arts Centre, Kevin works in the Ceramics department at Grays School of Art, as well as being a Collective founder of the Aberdeen Ceramics Workshop. Kevin is a highly qualified and experienced potter with a wealth of knowledge in wheel work, hand building and glazing techniques. Kevin will teach you everything you need to know from creating a piece, to adding texture and pattern or perfecting the finish of your ceramics.
