Japanese Nuno Felting Scarf Making

Saturday 8 February

About the workshop

In this workshop you will be guided through a step by step process that teaches you techniques for creating your own felted scarf.  Combining silk fabric, wool fibres and loose locks from a raw fleece, you’ll design and make a one of a kind piece of wearable art.

Nuno Felting is the process of making a new fabric by introducing a loose weave fabric with wool fibres, ‘nuno’ being the Japanese word for fabric or cloth. These two fibres are then combined using a wet felting technique to create a lightweight but strong and cosy fabric that drapes well, lending itself to the making of scarves.

This is a practical workshop and also packed with theory. Trish sources her fleece sustainably from local farmers and will share her wealth of knowledge and resources during the workshop.

What to bring

You will be provided with an apron along with all the materials needed. It’s useful to bring paper and pencil or a sketchbook to take notes or sketch out designs. Please bring 2 large old towels and a bag to carry home your complete (but damp!) scarf.

About your tutor

Tricia O’Meara is a local fibre artist who runs her own creative business called Wormit Wollies. All Tricia’s products are handmade using locally sourced materials. She uses a technique called wet-felting. Tricia’s love of felting came from being a small-holder with sheep and wanting to find a useful and meaningful way to use the sheared fleece. The process of wet felting has been around for many centuries.
