A Plate of Plork: Community Meal & Celebration

Saturday 22 June, 12-3pm

A celebration of play, care, and rest with food and workshops in Forgan Arts Centre’s gardens.

A Plate of Plork celebrates and shares the work of the Care Makers and Queer Makers Clubs who have been busy making art works for the Gardener’s Cottage. Join us to see the unveiling of their work! Throughout the day you can participate in activities including:

  • PIZZA PLORK! 12.30-2.30pm. Make your own pizza with artist and cook Jek McAllister using fresh ingredients from the garden and local Fife farms.
  • GARDEN PLANT ID TOUR + HARVEST, 12-1pm. With Fermental Health, a.k.a. Sean Roy Parker, and Garden Facilitator, Dr Helena Simmons.
  • THE HOUSE THAT HOLDS: GARDENER’S COTTAGE ARTWORKS LAUNCH, 1pm. Join us for the launch of the newly renovated Gardener’s Cottage and see artworks including stained glass, textiles and basketry created by local people over the last 5 months. The items on display have been made especially for the cottage and are to be used by its future residents as part of artist residencies and Carer’s retreats.
  • FERMENTAL HEALTH SEASONAL PRESERVES, 1-3pm. Join artist, writer and fermentation enthusiast Sean Roy Parker a.k.a. Fermental Health on a sensory tour of the  gardens, identifying and harvesting wild and cultivated plants, exploring their historical uses as food, medicine and textiles. Later, Roy will put on his apron and share practical recipes for how to manage  abundance and create tasty preserves that improve our gut health.
  • ‘GARDEN PLORK SPACES OF THE FUTURE’ MODEL MAKING, 1-3pm. Make a mini model to imagine and create spaces for ‘plork’ (play and work) which can inspire ideas of how we can spend time with and explore the more-than-human world.
  • PLORK PLAY KIT, 1-3pm. Explore the gardens with an Animist’s Play Kit designed and created by Play RadicalandPester & Rossiwith the Young Care Makers Club. The Play Kit is inspired by the concept of “plork”, a practice developed by American artist and activist Corita Kent which combines play and work. Slow down, zoom into the elements, explore your senses, tune into the supernatural, be curious, learn, play, and make magic with the ‘more-than-human’ world in the gardens of Forgan Arts Centre. This activity will be co-facilitated by Where Earth Ends, a research-creation project by Ben Ong, supported by the University of St Andrews’ Scotland’s Future Series, that aims to (re)discover what green spaces were, are, and can be.
  • SUMMER SOLSTICE YOGA , MEDITATION, MINDFULNESS & MOVEMENT. Join Lesley McKeran of Mood Yoga in the gardens for some yoga, meditation, mindfulness and movement. Some mats will be provided but bring your own mat along if you have one!
    Yoga + Meditation, 12-12.30pm
    Yoga + Meditation, 1-1.30pm
    Mindfulness + Movement, 2-2.45pm

This is a free event. Come dressed for all weathers as come rain or shine, we’ll be spending time outdoors. About Radical Acts of Plork

This is the finale event for ‘Radical Acts of Plork‘ a project led by artist Ruby Pester which supports unpaid carers and LGBTQIA+ people. Radical Acts of Plork is a creative exploration of community play, care, and rest, with and for each other as a means of regenerative social and environmental healing.

P L O R K is a playful term invented by Corita Kent, an American artist, designer, educator, former religious sister and advocate for social justice.

“We tend to think of play as abstract without a goal, and somewhat irresponsible, while work suggests a goal , is specific, honorable. Because of this, play can be more challenging – even though we have been taught to perceive work as that challenge. We need a third word – one which combines the two concepts and allows us to recognise them together as one responsible act necessary for human advancement. We combine the abstract and the concrete, the joy and the labour. That word would represent the ecstasy we feel when work and play are one.”
Corita Kent, from her book Learning By Heart, Teachings To Free The Creative Spirit

Radical Acts Of Plork is a project lending our imaginations to building creative, nurturing intergenerational community experiences of play, care and rest with and for each other, and as a means of regenerative social and environmental healing and wellbeing.
