Introduction to Sculptural Portraiture
Saturday 6 December, 10am-4.30pm
This day (7hour) workshop offers participants the opportunity to explore the approaches to sculptural portraiture using a variety of building methods, materials and processes. Sculpting in clay directly from photos, this workshop is designed to broaden your observational and practical skills as well as teach you various clay hand-building techniques.
Over 7 hours with a short breaks students will learn the following:
Morning:
- Considering, form and exploring ways to convey mass and proportions participants will develop an understanding of how to accurately create the human head in clay through hand building techniques.
- Assembling armatures and learning how to use the tools required for portraiture as well as methods of measurement, materials and building techniques.
- Starting to model clay portraits from the model initially considering proportion.
Afternoon:
- Continuing to develop and finish small to medium scale clay portraits considering facial details as well as surface treatment techniques, and finishing, Guidance on firing will be given prior to hollowing out and re assembling portraits in preparation for firing. There is an option for firing your work and collecting at a later date.
Teas/Coffees available but please bring a packed lunch.
About the tutor
This class is led by artist and ceramicist Kevin Andrew Morris. Initially undertaking Three Dimensional Design at Grays School of Art, Kevin went on to graduate in Ceramic Design from The Glasgow School of Art before furthering his education with post graduate courses at Robert Gordon’s University.
In addition to teaching at Forgan Arts Centre, Kevin works in the Ceramics department at Grays School of Art, as well as being a Collective founder of the Aberdeen Ceramics Workshop. Kevin is a highly qualified and experienced potter with a wealth of knowledge in wheel work, hand building and glazing techniques. Kevin will teach you everything you need to know from creating a piece, to adding texture and pattern or perfecting the finish of your ceramics.
