Herb propagation

Saturday 19 April

11am-12pm

About the workshop

Perennial herbs are easy plants to grow and look after, adding flavour to dishes and scent to your garden, they are often also good pollinator plants, helping bees and butterflies in your garden.
This free 1 hour workshop is a quick introduction to taking cuttings from perennial herbs, including thyme, rosemary and lavender.
Cuttings establish more quickly than seeds and have the same attributes as the plant they are taken from.
There will be a chance to make and take home your own cutting, with tips to increase cutting success and a chance to ask questions.
The workshop is free, booking is required.

What to Bring

The session will take place outside, so please dress for the weather.
If you have your own gardening gloves please bring them along to use as we will be handling compost, we have a few spare pairs if you need to borrow them.

About the Tutor

The Herb propagation session is run by Dr Helena Simmons.
Helena has an academic and research background, having completed a Botany B.Sc. (Hons) and a PhD at Glasgow University. Plants are the medium that can provide better biodiversity and climate outcomes, improve mental health and are needed to sustain ourselves, so after moving away from lab based research, Helena is keen to share her passion about plants via education and community engagement, working with volunteers in community gardens and with school groups. Plants are the foundations upon which all else rests. Helena leads on the strategy for the grounds and gardens working closely with volunteers, local people and partners to ensure the gardens are a site for climate action and activism, educating people in environmental sustainability, biodiversity, and gardening.
